Safety Information
Candles and Wax Melts
When it comes to creating a relaxing and inviting atmosphere in your home, there's nothing quite like the soft flickering glow of scented candles and the calming scents of wax melts. Whilst our products are designed to enhance your relaxation and create a soothing ambiance, it's crucial to remember that safety should always be a top priority whilst enjoying them. All of our products have safety instructions detailed on the item but we detail them below, just in the event that you have misplaced the label. Don't worry, we all do it.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended: It's essential to always keep an eye on your candles while they are lit. Accidents can happen in a matter of seconds, so make sure to fully extinguish the flame before leaving the room or going to bed. You should also put out a candle if the candle smokes, the flame is too high/large, or it repeatedly flickers or the flame isn’t controlled.
- Keep candles away from flammable materials: Ensure that your candles are placed on a stable and heat-resistant surface, at least 30cm away from any flammable objects such as, but not limited to, curtains, paper, or furniture. This will help prevent accidental fires.
- Keep candles out of reach of children and pets: Children and pets are naturally curious, and it's important to keep candles out of their reach to prevent accidents or injuries.
- Place candles or wax melt burners on a heat resistant surface: Candles and wax melt burners can get hot, so ensure they are placed on a heat resistant, non flammable surface to protect your surfaces from potential heat damage or from potentially starting a fire.
- Do not burn a candle all the way down: Glasses and jars containing candles can shatter without warning. This happens when the level of the wax in the jar decreases and the heat can no longer be absorbed by the wax, so always ensure you snuff out a candle and no longer burn or relight when the wax reaches 1cm from the base of the container. See our tips on how to remove the leftover wax and reuse your containers.
- Prevent tunnelling: Tunnelling is when your candle burns unevenly causing a tunnel like shape around the wick. To prevent this ensure the candle burns so that the wax pool covers the entire surface of the candle, reaching the edges of the container before snuffing. Candles have a burn memory so however they burn on the first use will be how they continue to burn thereafter.
- Do not burn in a draught: Keep candles out of draughts to prevent rapid, uneven burning, sooting and excessive dripping. Also, lightweight items can come into contact with the flame if in a draught.
- Do not burn candles for more than the specified time: Do not burn candles for more than 4 consecutive hours and leave at least 2 hours of cooling before relighting.
- Place candle upright: Stand candles and wax melt vessels upright to avoid dripping and minimise the risk of flaring or the candle falling over. Glass containers can crack if the flame touches the side.
- Keep wax pool clear of debris and matches: Flammable objects in the wax pool, such as matches, insects, flammable decorations or lumps from the wick, can ignite and cause the candle to overheat. Do not touch the candle container, it may be hot.
- Do not move a burning candle or whilst the wax is liquified: Moving a candle can have the same effect as placing it in a draught. Always ensure that a candle is fully extinguished and cooled before moving.
- Trim the wick: Before lighting your candle, make sure to trim the wick to the specified height on the safety label before every use. This helps control the flame height and reduces the risk of the candle producing excessive smoke or soot. If you don't have specialist wick trimmers, you can use nail clippers.
- Remove all packaging before use: Removing all packaging before lighting your candle is an essential safety measure. Packaging materials, including labels, are usually made of paper, card, or other flammable materials. If these come in contact with the flame, they could ignite and cause a fire. So even though the labels are pretty and part of why many people love the products, please ensure they are removed before use.
- Only use tealight in holders, oil/wax melt burners and warming stoves with sufficient ventilation: Insufficient ventilation can cause the tealight to flare up.
- Always snuff the flame, do not blow it out: Use a candle snuffer when putting out a candle. It’s especially important not to blow down at a candle in a container as this increases the risk of flaring and hot wax could spatter up in your face.
- Always use a candle holder: Candle holders should be heat resistant and non-flammable. They should also be stable and big enough to collect dripping wax. This is especially important for votive candles.
- Leave at least 10cm between burning candles: Follow recommended minimum distance stated on the package, or if not available, leave a minimum of 10cm. Candles placed too close together can drip, soot or flare up.
- Never use liquid to extinguish a flame: Liquid can cause the hot wax to splatter and might break a glass container.
